If you’ve ever dipped a toe into the world of hot yoga, there’s a chance you’ve heard of Bikram Yoga. It’s one of the original hot yoga styles, famous for its set structure, long classes and extra-intense heat. One of our frequently asked questions at Hotpod Yoga is — Is Hotpod the same as Bikram? The short answer? No.
While Bikram and Hotpod Yoga are both forms of hot yoga, that’s pretty much where the similarities stop. Our approach is different in feel, flow and overall vibe. Curious what makes Hotpod…Hotpod? Here’s how we do things a little differently to Bikram Yoga and why that matters.
Sequence style: freedom vs formula
Let’s start with the flow. Bikram Yoga follows a set sequence of 26 yoga postures and two breathing exercises, taught in exactly the same way every time. It’s precise, structured and highly consistent — which works for some.
At Hotpod, we mix it up a bit. Our vinyasa styled classes follow a familiar arc and rhythm, but you won’t get the exact same postures every time. This keeps things fresh and gives our teachers room to adapt: whether that’s tailoring the class to the energy in the room or building up toward something more specific. It’s dynamic, playful and a little more intuitive. With modifications and variations offered throughout, this means you get to move in a way that feels good for your body, with enough variety to keep things engaging every time you step on the mat.
The heat
While both styles use heat to warm up the body, increase flexibility and support a deeper experience, there is a difference in heat intensity. Bikram is practiced at around 40°C, whereas at Hotpod, we’ve found 37°C to be the sweet spot.
A toasty 37°C is normal body temperature, making Hotpod classes warm enough to challenge you, but not overwhelm you. The warmth builds up gently as you move, helping to relax your muscles and build a sweat, all while remaining in control. Craving more intensity at Hotpod? Let the movement do the talking with our Dynamic Flow — it brings the fire through strength, pace and progression. You’ll still leave the class feeling invigorated, but not wiped out by the heat alone.
How many minutes?
Traditional Bikram classes are ninety minutes long: a deep dive into discipline and endurance. At Hotpod, we keep it shorter and more accessible. Our classes are either forty-five or sixty minutes long, with specialised workshops running for longer. This range of class lengths gives beginners space to build their practice in a supportive way. It also means you can still get your fix of strength, stretch and calm, even if you’re tight on time.
No pressure, just presence
In Bikram, things are pretty structured, even water breaks are set. That works for some, especially if you’re into discipline and order.
At Hotpod, we do things differently. We’re big believers in tuning in and trusting your body. Need a sip of water? Take one. Want to pause in a child’s pose or skip a posture? Totally fine. Our teachers offer variations and options throughout class, so you can dial it up or down depending on how you’re feeling that day. You’re in charge of your own experience, and we’re here to support that, not control it.
The pod: a place to retreat
One thing that makes Hotpod feel especially welcoming — particularly if you’re new to yoga — is the pod itself. It’s a cosy, cocoon-like space filled with calming scents, soft heat and low ambient lighting. The gentle purple glow helps quiet the mind and dial down distractions. In contrast, Bikram classes are often held in brightly lit studios, which can feel a bit full-on if you’re finding your feet. The pod gives you a little sanctuary to tune into yourself and move at your own pace, no matter your experience level.
Different flows for different feels
Bikram offers one set style of class, which means you know exactly what you’re getting every time. At Hotpod, we like to give you a bit more choice. Alongside variety in sequence, we also offer variety in class types. Some days you want to move and build strength, other days you just need to melt into your mat — however you feel, there’s something for you.
Our Hotpod Flow is dynamic and grounding, a Rest and Restore will offer you deep release and our Foundation Flow takes things slow with lots of support and guidance. You can pick what suits your body, your mood or the kind of day you’ve had. Having gentler practices on the timetable also gives beginners space to get used to the heat before stepping into a more fiery flow. Find out more about our styles of classes here.
